5 Signs Your Home Needs an Electrical Panel Upgrade

Your electrical panel regulates the entire power flow in your home. Running modern appliances on outdated panels can lead to circuit failure, shocks, and house fires.

As we pack our homes with high-power HVAC systems, smart electronics, double-door refrigerators, and electric vehicle chargers, our electricity demands skyrocket. If your home still relies on the same electrical panel installed 30 or 40 years ago, it is likely running at maximum capacity and wearing down rapidly.

Here are the five critical warning signs that indicate it is time to upgrade your home service panel to 200 Amps:

1. Flickering or Dimming Lights

Do your overhead lights dim or flicker for a split second when your refrigerator kicks on, or when you run a hair dryer? This is a direct indicator that the appliance is drawing a massive surge of power that your electrical panel struggles to distribute, momentarily starving the rest of the circuit.

2. Frequently Tripping Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers are designed to trip (shutting off power) when a circuit draws more amps than it is safely rated to carry. While an occasional trip is normal, regularly having to walk to your garage or utility closet to reset a flipped breaker switch means your circuits are chronically overloaded.

3. Warm Panel Plates or Burning Smells

Your electrical panel should never feel warm to the touch, and it should never emit odors. If you notice a warm cover plate, a chemical plastic burning smell, or soft buzzing/crackling sounds, it indicates loose connections or failing breakers that are generating extreme resistive heat. This is a severe fire hazard that requires immediate Emergency Electrical Dispatch.

4. Obsolete Fuse Boxes or Recalled Panel Brands

If your home still uses a round screw-in fuse box instead of modern circuit breaker switches, you are operating on severely outdated infrastructure. Additionally, if your breaker panel was manufactured by **Federal Pacific (FPE)** or **Zinsco**, these brands are notorious for design defects that fail to trip under stress. Insurers often refuse to cover properties containing these boxes.

5. Planning to Electrify Your Home

If you are planning to install a new heat pump, solar panels, a hot tub, or an EV Charging Station, your old 100 Amp panel simply does not have the capacity. Adding high-draw devices requires upgrading to a modern 200 Amp service panel to distribute power safely.

Take Action Immediately

If you observe any of these warning signs, do not ignore them. Electrical fires often start silently behind walls. Contact a certified professional to assess your system and upgrade your electrical panels.
